Preservation
20 Years of Protection. 200 Hectares of Wild.
Now, We Need Your Support.
The legal ink is dry and many of the north trails are now officially protected—but the work to keep them open starts today. After three years of intense planning, canvasing, negotiations, mapping, and legal drafting, we’ve secured a landmark agreement to protect our hills. The trails we love are legal and legitimate! Now, we are launching a critical fundraising campaign to honor our commitment to the Ejido and ensure these 200 hectares stay wild and rideable for the next two decades.
The Big Win: A 20-Year Guarantee
We have successfully partnered with the Ejido of El Sargento and La Ventana to create a Servidumbre Ecológica (Conservation Easement). This legally protects 200 hectares of our stunning hillside wilderness for the next 20 years. In a community where the loss of access and wild open areas is felt more everyday, this park reverses the trend and guarantees conservation for the next 20 years.
This agreement secures the ground beneath your tires and boots on the legendary trails we all know and love:
- Minitas
- Pista Pista
- Mala Mujer
- Brio
- And more! New trails coming too!
Why We Are Fundraising Now
Getting to this point was a marathon. Over the last three years, we raised the initial funds to cover the startup costs and first years payment required to make this vision a reality, including:
- Hiking/Biking classes: Helping earn trust and showcase the area to protect.
- Professional Mapping: Defining the exact 200-hectare boundaries.
- Legal Fees: Drafting a rock-solid contract to protect the land from development.
- Coordination: Working with lawyers, the Ejido Assembly, ARCo (monitoring), and the International Community Foundation (ICF).
- First years annual payment.
The Reality: Funding Conservation
While the contract is signed for 20 years, the park must be funded annually. To honor this agreement, we provide a yearly monetary incentive to the Ejido—fair compensation for their choice to protect the land rather than sell it for development.
This payment must be made every single year to keep the park active and the trails open. The first year is already paid for thanks to our generous donors!
Join the Community Effort
We’ve built the foundation; now we need the hikers, bikers, and trail runners who use these paths to help fuel the engine. We are looking for donors to step up and contribute to this annual fund to ensure we never lose access to these world-class trails.
- Transparency: Through our partnership with the International Community Foundation (ICF), you can make donations that are managed with 100% oversight and are used strictly for the park incentive and management.
We’ve secured the land for 20 years. Now, let’s make sure we fund it.
If you’ve ever enjoyed the flow of Mala Mujer or a sunrise hike on Minitas, please consider investing in the dirt you love.
More Than Just Dirt: The Value of Our Open Spaces
While the water and the wind have historically been the main draw for La Ventana, the mountains and arroyos surrounding our bay are just as vital. This park isn’t just about recreation; it’s a powerhouse of community value:
- Providing an area for Educational Opportunities: LaVESTA is dedicated to our hiking and mountain biking classes that bring local kids to the park to learn about conservation, their local flaura and fauna, and to have fun!
- Boosting the Local Economy: Protected trails increase land and home values. Residents and investors are consistently more attracted to communities where nature is accessible and preserved.
- Breaking the “Seasonal” Cycle: Our “wind-only” economy can be tough on local businesses. World-class hiking and biking turn El Sargento and La Ventana into year-round destinations, keeping visitors here longer and spending more in our shops and restaurants.
- Community Health: Access to these trails reduces medical costs by encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle. From the high-intensity Sports Vision Race to a casual family stroll, these hills keep us moving.
- A Gift to Future Generations: Trails provide low-to-no-cost recreation for local families. Once these lands are lost to development or privatization, they are lost forever. We are ensuring our kids have the same “backyard” we do.
