An update from LaVESTA – October 2025

The riding season is starting and LaVESTA has been hard at work organizing this year’s activities.

Trails:

– Volunteer trail days start in the next few weeks (and we have fancy new tools to make the job easier, and more volunteer swag to thank the folks coming out to help).

– The crew led by Nonato has been hard at work starting to get trails ready. They are currently working on the Nonato trail, which is more treacherous than usual, so take it extra easy out there, and on all the other trails.

– We do have issues to solve on El Jalito as well as access to Punta Gorda, which will be our first priority.

Hike Program:

Our hiking program coordinator, Grace, has created an expanded hike calendar with several primary schools in the area, and a lesson plan that makes the hikes a true learning experience. Expect to see posts about the hikes and reach out if you want to help out.

Bike classes:

The biking classes for local kids should start mid-November. We will be sending out a notice in the next few days. Classes will take place twice per week

Trail Rescue:

If you have not seen Jacki’s post, remember that our volunteer rescue team can be activated by sending a WhatsApp message to +52 612 221 6416. LaVESTA Rescue is always looking for new volunteers! If you would like to get involved, please reach out — no prior experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome.

Ejido Park Project:

This is our most important work item and highest priority. We have devoted many hours this summer collecting and reviewing documents (thank you to the Ejido and the Ejido office for the patience), drafting documents, ensuring we have funds, and creating a Park ICF fund. We are ready to try and finalize the project. Of course for this we will need the support of the Ejido and the Ejido Assembly. We will reconnect with them in the next weeks to see if we can find a way to move forward together.

We would not be able to embark on such a lofty goal without the amazing support of our community. If you have already donated to LaVESTA, Thank you!

If you have not, and wish to, please visit https://lavesta.org/donate/

Logo & Merchandise:

Thanks to Maryann, we have a new annual logo, as per our tradition. With that come new stickers and magnets, and in the next few weeks we should also have hats and t-shirts. We will also have riding jerseys, designed again by the talented artist Emanuel Silva. If last year you got long sleeves and black and white, this year we are changing things around, you will see short sleeves and colors!

Trail Running Race:

The 9th Trail Run El Sargento is coming Sunday February 1st. This is an event put on by Sportvision. LaVESTA assisted by suggesting the routes, and will help before, during and after the race. This is a great occasion to show that the trails are an incredible resource for the community, both for recreation and economic opportunities. In exchange for our help we will be able to send 10 people to the race for free: we will try to find participants in the local student population (if you are a student in El Sargento, contact us!)

Web site:

http://www.lavesta.org has a fresh look! Thank you Carolyn for your hard work during the summer.

Donate:

To make a donation to LaVESTA to help with the programs above, see our donation page here – https://lavesta.org/donate/

Get Involved:

LaVESTA is organizing a public get together in the month of November, to meet and talk about what we are doing. We’ll post the date soon! Come out for that and/or see our volunteer page if you’d like to get involved. We’re always looking for more help!
